Annette Island or Taak'w Aan is an island in the southeastern part of Alaska on the Pacific coast . It is part of the Alexander Archipelago and is located south of Revillagigedo Island . The highest point of the mountainous island is Tamgas Mountain , with a height of 1095 meters.
Metlakatla on the west coast is the largest town on the island and was founded by the Anglican missionary William Duncan. The entire island has been an Indian reservation since March 3, 1891, and is inhabited by the Tsimshians , who immigrated from what is now British Columbia in the late 19th century . Only the residents of Metlakatla kept their reservation under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 under that treaty.
The island was named in 1879 by WH Dall of the US Coast and Geodetic Survey after his wife, Annette Whitney Dall.
