Etolin Island is an island in southeast Alaska ( Panhandle ) of the Alexander Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean .
It is located between Prince of Wales Island in the west and mainland Alaska in the east. The island is about 878 km², 48 km long and 35 km wide. The island got its name from Adolf Etolin (1840-1845), the governor of Russian America .
Today Etolin is part of the Tongass National Forest , the south of the island is designated as a Wilderness Area . There is a population of moose on the island that were brought to Etolin from the mainland.
