The Prince-of-Wales-Insel ( English Prince of Wales Island , German also Prince of Wales Island ) is an island in the Pacific Ocean in southeast Alaska ( Panhandle ) . With an area of 6,674 km², it is the largest island in the Alexander Archipelago and the third largest island in the United States.
The island is mountainous and densely forested. It is part of the Tongass National Forest . The most important places are Craig , Klawock and Hydaburg . About 6300 inhabitants live on the island.
The main industries are forestry (production of timber), fishing and the production of canned fish .
The island is named for the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area .
On the island is On Your Knees Cave , which is where the oldest human remains in North America have been found.
