National Geodetic Survey

The US National Geodetic Survey ( NGS ) is a geodesy organization subordinated to the US government , which is responsible for national surveys within the USA. It has been part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 1970 and is based in Silver Spring , Maryland.

The National Geodetic Survey (s) also oversees various research agendas , including in the area of reference systems , time services , geoid determination and satellite geodesy . In the basic forms of division between federal and state agendas, there are similarities to the German system ( land surveying offices and BKG ), while other states know surveying as the task of the central administration.

history

The authority was founded in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson as the Survey of the Coast with the task of surveying the coasts and creating nautical charts. In 1878 the name was changed to US Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC & GS) . In 1970 the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was founded, the department of which is the National Ocean Service (NOS), into which the US Coast and Geodetic Survey was incorporated as the National Geodetic Survey .
