Nathaniel Philbrick

Nathaniel Philbrick (born June 11, 1956 in Boston , Massachusetts , USA ) is an American historian and author .

Life

Philbrick attended high school in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . He then graduated from Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island with a degree in English . At Duke University , he studied American literature with a Master of Arts (MA) degree .

Philbrick then worked for the trade magazine Sailing World for four years and then as a freelancer. During these years he wrote and edited some books on sailing and looked after his two children. In 1986 the family moved to the island of Nantucket off the coast of Massachusetts, where they still live today.

Since 1984, Philbrick has written more than a dozen books, the content of which relates primarily to the history of the United States, seafaring, and the local history of Nantucket. Some of his publications have received awards. His book about the American whaling ship Essex was made into a film in 2015. The film title is the same in both the English and German versions as that of the book on which it is based.
