history
After Nelson Mandela relinquished his presidency to Thabo Mbeki in June 1999 , he set up the foundation in August of the same year in order to safeguard his further political activities. Since then the foundation has been based in a house in Houghton Estate , Johannesburg . Mandela lived in this district until he moved to Qunu in 2011 ; Mandela also died here in 2013. The German organizational scientist Heiko Roehl helped set up the foundation. In 2002, the foundation helped set up the South African-British Mandela Rhodes Foundation . From 2004, with Mandela's gradual withdrawal from public duties, the renovation of the foundation began, which henceforth focused on Mandela's life's work and legacy. Until 2010 Mandela worked in the Foundation's offices.
