The building of the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg

The Apartheid Museum is a museum in Johannesburg in the South African province of Gauteng , in which apartheid in South Africa is documented - from its early beginnings, its emergence from 1948 , through its development up to its termination in 1994 and the subsequent processing. The historical and political international context of apartheid is also explained. It is the only museum dedicated exclusively to apartheid.

In addition to individual exhibits, the documentation is based on numerous texts, photographs, posters and films. Important focal points are the dissolution of the Johannesburg district of Sophiatown from 1955 to 1963 and the school uprising in Soweto in 1976.

The museum, which is located in close proximity to Gold Reef City , opened in 2001. Its creation is based on an agreement within the framework of the licensing for the Gold Reef Casino . It is run independently.
