Mosima Gabriel "Tokyo" Sexwale [ sɛˈxwɑlɛ ] (born March 5, 1953 in Orlando West , later Soweto ) is a South African politician, businessman and multimillionaire. Sexwale was an anti- apartheid activist, like other important figures, such as Nelson Mandela , imprisoned on Robben Island . Sexwale became Prime Minister of Gauteng Province after the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994 . In 1998 he temporarily withdrew from politics and became one of the most famous business people in the country. 2009-2013 he was Minister of Human Settlements in the Cabinet of Jacob Zuma . His nickname " Tokyo " is derived from his youthful passion for karate . His surname comes from the Tshivenda .

Childhood and youth

Sexwale was born the son of a hospital employee at the General Hospital in Orlando West, part of what would later become the Johannesburg township of Soweto. He grew up in the rebellious mood of the black township; At the age of eight he first heard the detonation of the African National Congress (ANC) bombs in a nearby post office . In 1973 he graduated from Orlando West High School .

Anti-apartheid engagement and imprisonment

In the late 1960s, Sexwale became the local leader of the radical South African Students' Organization , which was part of the Black Consciousness Movement . In the early 1970s he joined the armed wing of the ANC, the Umkhonto we Sizwe . During this time he lived in Swaziland to continue his business studies at the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland . In 1975 he went into exile in the Soviet Union , where he completed military training and then specialized in military engineering .

After his return to South Africa in 1976, Sexwale was arrested along with eleven companions after a shootout by South African security forces. After nearly two years of trial, they were convicted of terrorism and conspiracy against the government. In 1977, Sexwale was transferred to Robben Island maximum security prison to serve his 18-year sentence. While in custody, he completed his Bachelor of Commerce distance learning from the University of South Africa . Sexwale was released from prison in July 1990 after 13 years on the basis of the Groote-Schuur Agreement between the South African government and the ANC, which provided for an amnesty for political prisoners.

Political career in post-apartheid South Africa

After his release from prison, Sexwale returned to Johannesburg, where he headed the ANC's public relations department. He was also appointed head of "special projects" and as such was subordinate to the military headquarters of the ANC. In September 1990 Sexwale was elected to the Executive Committee of the ANC for the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging region . He took over the party chairmanship in this region in 1991 and held it until his resignation in 1997. After the elections in South Africa in April 1994, Sexwale was elected the first prime minister of the province of Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging , which was renamed Gauteng in December 1994 . In general, in this role he is awarded the pacification of several troubled townships.

In 1998 Sexwale left politics for a few years to get into business.

Before the ANC party congress in Polokwane at the end of 2007 , Sexwale was initially traded as one of the candidates for the party chairmanship, but then sided with Jacob Zuma , who beat Thabo Mbeki in a fight vote. Sexwale was elected to the party's National Executive Committee . After Zuma's election as president in May 2009, he appointed Sexwale Minister for Settlements . In 2013 he was released by Zuma.

Entrepreneurial activity and social engagement

After retiring from politics in 1998, Sexwale founded the company Mvelaphanda Holdings ("mvelaphanda" comes from the Tshivenda and means "progress"), which is mainly active in the fields of raw material mining (platinum, gold and diamonds) and the energy industry. His company rose to become the third largest diamond producer in the world after De Beers and JFPI.

Sexwale also earned a reputation for its diverse social commitment. These include a trusteeship with the Nelson Mandela Foundation , the Global Philanthropists Circle , the Business Trust and the Robben Island Ex-Prisoners Trust .

Soccer

Sexwale was a member of the Organizing Committee of the Soccer World Cup 2010 and is a member of the Media Commission and the Task Force against Racism and Discrimination of FIFA . At the beginning of October 2015 he was brought into play by Franz Beckenbauer as a possible successor to Sepp Blatter as FIFA President. On October 24, Sexwale announced his candidacy for the office. However, shortly before the first ballot on February 26, 2016, he announced his retirement.

In 2005 Sexwale hosted the South African edition of the show The Apprentice . He is married to Judy van Vuuren, a white woman whom he met in her capacity as a lawyer when she was released from prison. The couple have two children.
