Qunu ( IPA : ˈk͡ǃuːnu ) is a village in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa .

geography

Qunu is about 32 kilometers southwest of Mthatha , the capital of the former Transkei . The place is on the N2 national road between Butterworth and Mthatha. In 2001 Qunu had 213 residents.

Nelson Mandela

Former South African President Nelson Mandela was born and raised near Qunu. In his book Long Walk to Freedom , Mandela describes the place as the place where he experienced his happiest childhood moments.

After his retirement from politics in 1999, Mandela had a retirement home in Qunu. This included a replica of the last house Mandela was imprisoned in and a villa. There is also a branch of the Nelson Mandela Museum . After Mandela had mainly lived in Johannesburg even after his retirement from politics , he moved to Qunu on July 14, 2011. He was buried here on December 15, 2013.
