Chenega [tʃɪˈnigə] is a census-designated place (CDP) mainly inhabited by Indians of the Alutiiq language family in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area in the US state of Alaska . Chenega is located on Evans Island in Prince William Sound .
history
The CDP consists of the village of Chenega Bay , which was created to replace the original village on Chenega Island destroyed by a tsunami triggered by the Good Friday quake in March 1964 . After the quake, in which a third of the then 68 inhabitants of the original village were killed, some survivors moved to a reception center, others to surrounding cities. In 1982 a family settled on Evans Island and between 1984 and 1991, 26 more families followed to what is now called Chenega Bay.
25 years after the earthquake, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground in Prince William Sound, causing an oil spill that also affected Chenega.
The place is connected to the ferry system of the Alaska Marine Highway .
