Angoon , formerly known as Angun , is a location in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area of the US state of Alaska , 97 km southwest of Juneau . In the language of the Tlingit "Angoon" means something like "settlement on the isthmus."

Angoon is next to Cube Cove the larger of the two settlements on Admiralty Island and is located at the confluence of Mitchell Bay in Chatham Strait . Before the arrival of Europeans in the region, the island was inhabited by Tlingit Indians from the Kootznoowoo tribe for over 1000 years .

history

During the time that Alaska was under Russian ownership, fur trading was the predominant economic activity. In 1878, after the Alaska Purchase , the Northwest Trading Company established a trading post on nearby Killisnoo Island and hired Angoon residents to whale.

In 1882, a member of the Tlingit tribe was killed in an accident on a whaler . The Northwest Trading Company refused to honor the victim's relatives' claim for compensation and turned to the United States Navy in Sitka for help. Angoon was then targeted and destroyed. In 1973, Angoon received a $ 90,000 settlement from the United States government for destroying the city.

Today fishing and processing are the main industries in Angoon. The place is connected to the ferry system of the Alaska Marine Highway .
