Unorganized Borough
The Unorganized Borough (English for Unorganized District ) is the part of the US state of Alaska that is not incorporated into one of the nineteen organized boroughs of Alaska. The Unorganized Borough extends over about 970,500 km² and is therefore larger than Germany and France combined; However, it is inhabited by only about 82,000 people (as of 2000), which makes up 13% of the population of Alaska. The largest city in the region is Bethel .
That the entire area of a state is not divided into counties or equivalent units occurs only in Alaska in the USA. From 1970 to 2013 the Unorganized Borough was divided into eleven census areas . Since the removal of the Petersburg Census Area there are ten:
With the exception of the incorporated cities, public services are organized directly by the state of Alaska as the region has no communities .
The disorganized state of the huge area and its future has been discussed recently. In recent years there have been plans to integrate parts of the Unorganized Borough into existing administrative units.
