Nome Census Area

The Nome Census Area is a census area in the US state of Alaska on the Seward Peninsula and along the east coast of the Norton Sound . It also includes St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea .

In 2010 the population was 9,492. Nome belongs to the Unorganized Borough and therefore has no administrative headquarters. The census area has an area of ​​73,253 km², of which 59,572 km² is land and 13,681 km² is water. The largest city in the region is Nome .

Parts of the Yukon Delta and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge as well as the Bering Land Bridge National Preserves are in the Nome Census Area.

history

The name of the Census Area is derived from Cape Nome. This got its name because of a transcription error. The cartographer noted on the original manuscript “? Surname". When transcribed onto British Admiralty cards in 1853, it became “C. Nome ”and later Cape Nome.

The ghost town of Pilgrim Hot Springs has been registered in the NRHP since April 1977.

20 buildings and sites in the Census Area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 29, 2020), including the Cape Nome Mining District Discovery Sites , the Iyatayet Site and the Wales Sites with National Historic Landmark status .
