Nome is a city in the Nome Census Area of the US state Alaska .
Nome is on the south coast of the Seward Peninsula at the mouth of the Snake River . The Nome region was used for hunting by the Iñupiat for centuries, but there was never a permanent settlement. In 1889 the Norwegian Jafet Lindeberg and the Swedes Erik Lindblöm and John Brynteson found gold near what is now Nome, which triggered the Nome gold rush (the Klondike gold rush had started in 1896 ). As a result, a settlement was created that had 10,000 inhabitants in 1899.
Large fires in 1905 and 1934 and severe storms in 1900, 1913, 1945 and 1974 destroyed the gold rush architecture of the city, of which nothing is preserved today.
Nome is the destination of the Iditarod , the longest dog sled race in the world. The start is always on the 1st Saturday in March in Anchorage . The first teams reach their destination, 1,500 km away, after nine days. The race is reminiscent of the dog sled teams that transported goods and mail on the Iditarod Trail at the beginning of the 20th century . The dramatic transport of serum to fight a diphtheria epidemic in Nome , which broke out in the city in January 1925, has also been linked to the famous dog sled race. In the children's book series The Magic Tree House , the relief operation to transport the serum and the monument to the sled dog Balto in New York's Central Park are themed (also in the film Balto - A dog with the heart of a hero from 1995 and its sequels, in which the city the main place of action is).
Nome was mentioned in one scene in The Simpsons : Marge knits a blanket with the words "Nome Sweet Nome" in a cabin in Alaska - a reference to the English "Home Sweet Home" - "Sweet home, happiness alone!"
