The film is in the style of a mockumentary . From the film makers is claimed the movie was based on a true story, that of tape recorders and video recordings of events in October 2000 in Nome ( Alaska are supported), by the psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler and her patients are said to have been made.

The film was released on DVD on April 15, 2010 in Germany .

action

Dr. Abigail Tyler is a psychologist in the small town of Nome, Alaska, and is continuing a study on her late husband. They treated several patients, all with insomnia suffer that with the apparent hallucination of an emerging Barn Owl associated with large black eyes, who gaze at night. Through hypnosis she tries to reactivate the patient's memories from the previous nights. She records the sessions with her patients. The patients suddenly react fearfully, almost in panic, while under hypnosis. With the help of her deceased husband's notes, Dr. Tyler to identify the cause of their patients' anxiety . It turns out that the supposed owls with the big eyes are actually aliens who kidnap these people and carry out cruel experiments on them. She relates this to the fact that in Nome, most of the people in Alaska simply disappear without a trace.

After the hypnosis sessions, their patients commit suicide, murder, and injuries. Dr. Tyler is suspected of being involved by Sheriff August. She wants to leave the city with her two children, disturbed, but that night, as she claims, her daughter is kidnapped by aliens. A deputy in a patrol car was watching Dr. Tyler's house so she doesn't escape during the police investigation. During the night he noticed a large object over the house. The camera in the patrol car records this, but is disturbed by the object, so that the recording is severely distorted. Dr. Tyler is convinced that the other people involved - including herself - were abducted and brought back by aliens.

Reviews

The fourth type received very negative reviews almost all of the time, with the Metacritic website calculating an average rating of 34% from 27 reviews.

Above all, the filmmakers' intention to convince the viewer that the plot of the film is based on real events is often criticized. Filme-welt.com thinks that " the fourth kind is literally suppressed by the claim of alleged authenticity".

Robert Eichelsheimer from Filmstarts also notes that “the trick with the assertion of true events [...] is now being used in an almost inflationary way”.

Another point of criticism is the constant change between the normal film sequences and the supposedly real film material, so the director “cannot choose between pseudo-documentation and game scenes. With this mix he can neither create emotional depth and empathy for the characters, nor does he achieve the disturbing consequence of a Blair Witch Project ”.

background

In reality, there have been some mysterious cases of people missing in Nome. The FBI investigated a total of 20 cases of possible alien abductions in Nome by 2005. These were revoked by the authorities. It was said that the victims disappeared from alcohol abuse and froze to death from the freezing temperatures in the wilderness. Nine bodies were not found.

Remarks

The fourth type was the first major film by screenwriter and director Olatunde Osunsanmi. The shooting did not take place in Nome, Alaska, but in Vancouver , British Columbia ( Canada ), Los Angeles ( California ), Sofia ( Nu Boyana Film Studios ) and Vitoscha , Bulgaria . In the film, Nome is depicted as a small town surrounded by coniferous forests and mountains; in reality, Nome is located on a treeless, flat tundra . The film budget was 10 million dollars and the film played worldwide over 45 million US dollars.
