Sled dog races are the main sporting activity for sled dogs . There are races over short distances, some with two runs, and long-distance races, where the challenge for mushers and teams is to overcome long distances under adverse conditions. The Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome in memory of the dog sled teams on the Iditarod Trail is still considered a prototype of such a sled dog race . The distance is officially 1049 miles. But even when dog teams were still working on a large scale, there were races. The peoples who use sled dogs certainly used to run races. The All Alaska Sweepstakes were dog sled races in Alaska during the gold rush period, some of which involved substantial betting money.

The organization of the shorter races is the responsibility of the sled dog sport associations or their member clubs in the individual countries. Depending on the association, the regulations regulate which sled dogs are allowed to participate, which classes (with regard to the number of dogs in a team) there are and which distances are contested.

Participation in races requires a reliable team of dogs, especially over long distances. Other dog sleds are used depending on the requirements of the race . During long-distance races, bivouac equipment , dog food and booties are still required.
