Palmer is a city in and at the same time the administrative seat (Bourough Seat) of Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States . The city is located in the center of the Matanuska - Susitna valley about 68 kilometers northeast of Anchorage and can be reached via the Glenn Highway .
The city was founded in 1916 as a railroad station on the Alaska Railroad . In 1935, 203 families from Michigan , Wisconsin, and Minnesota moved to Palmer and started a proper town there with state support.
