Skwentna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States . The area is located on the south bank of the Skwentna River 70 air miles northwest of Anchorage in the Yentna River Valley .
history
The area of today's CDP Skwentna was settled for centuries by indigenous people of the Dena'ina - Athabascans . 1908 built Alaska Road Commission the street from Seward to Nome , by Old Skwentna from the Susitna River led up to Rainy Pass. Gold prospectors , trappers and Indians often used this road with sled dogs to transport goods to the Innoko mining area. A post office opened in 1937. A runway was built after World War II , and in 1950 the US Navy built a radar station and a recreation camp in the area. State-owned land was released for settlement in the 1960s.
