Talkeetna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States . The name “Talkeetna” means something like “place where food is stored by the river”. The area is 185 km north of Anchorage near Denali at the confluence of the Susitna , Chulitna and Talkeetna rivers .

history

Talkeetna was originally settled by Athapaskan Indians. When gold was found on the lower reaches of the Susitna River in 1892, prospectors and prospectors came to the region. In 1915, US President Woodrow Wilson chose Talkeetna as the headquarters for the construction of the Alaska Railroad . The city was founded in 1919 when the railway company offered 80 lots for sale. Before the construction of the George Parks Highway in 1964, the railroad was the only land connection to Talkeetna. The town center with many buildings from the early 20th century is listed as a National Historic Site .

The area is accessible via the George Parks Highway and Talkeenna Spur Road. Many small air taxi companies operate at the well-developed airfield ( IATA airport code : TKA) . The base camp on the southern flank of Denali is easy to reach from Talkeetna.
