Susitna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States .
geography
Susitna is located on the western bank of the Susitna River , at the foot of Mount Susitna . The area is located west of Big Lake about 30 air miles from Anchorage .
history
The area of today's CDP Susitna was first settled by the indigenous people of the Dena'ina (Tanaina) - Athabasques . Today the majority of the population is descended from European immigrants . A post office was established in 1906 and closed again in 1943. Over 80% of the 100 houses in the area are now only inhabited depending on the season. Some residents work as fishermen , others are retired .

At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) Susitna CDP had 37 inhabitants on a land area of 409.8 km². The median age was 44.5 years (US national mean: 35.3 years). The per capita income (engl. The per capita income ) amounted to US $ 17,355 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 16.1% of the population had their income below the poverty line (national average in the USA: 12.4%). 32.4% of the population are of Scottish - Irish descent, 24.3% are of Slovak - and 21.6% of German descent.

Fishing and rafting on the Susitna River are popular pastimes in the summer months. A lodge provides accommodation for travelers. The area is not accessible via a regular road connection.
