Point MacKenzie is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States . The area lies between the south bank of the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet and the Little Susitna River on Point MacKenzie Road south of Big Lake and southwest of Wasilla .
history
The area of today's CDP Point MacKenzie was first settled by the local indigenous people of the Dena'ina - Athabascans . Ships often stopped at Point MacKenzie on the way to Knik Arm in adverse weather conditions. In 1915, docks and a canning factory were built near Goose Bay. In 1958 a missile base was built on Goose Bay. This offered job opportunities and promoted settlement in the area. The missile base is no longer in operation today.
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) Point MacKenzie CDP had 111 inhabitants on a land area of 383.3 km². The mean age was 38.3 years (US national mean: 35.3 years). The per capita income (engl. The per capita income ) amounted to US $ 23,228 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 22.7% of the population had their income below the poverty line (US national average: 12.4%). 9.0% of the population are of German descent and 5.4% are descended from the indigenous people of Alaska.
Economy and Infrastructure
Many residents work in Palmer , Wasilla, and Anchorage . Port MacKenzie's industrial port is currently used primarily for shipping prefabricated houses to remote rural areas. The area is accessible via Knik Road and the George Parks Highway . A private runway is available for air traffic .
