Glacier View is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States .
geography
Glacier View is on the eastern border of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The area is west of Gunsight Mountain on Matanuska Glacier and is accessible via the Glenn Highway . Glacier View is a two to three hour drive from Anchorage .
history
Glacier View is on the western corner of the Copper River - Ahtna - Athabasken Indian reservation . The Ahtnas were semi-nomads who traded in fur with the Dena'ina Indian tribe on Cook Inlet . The Glacier View-Tahneta Pass served as a thoroughfare into the interior of the country for gold prospectors . During the 1920s, gold mining was one of the very few industries of importance in the area. Some miners settled in the area. During the Second World War , the Glenn Highway was expanded to the Richardson Highway near Glennallen .
economy
There are several lodges in the area with accommodation for residents and travelers. In the summer, highway traffic offers job opportunities. The residents mostly buy goods for their daily needs in the catchment area of Wasilla and Palmer or in Anchorage. There are no shopping opportunities in the area itself. There are some mining and gravel excavation sites.

At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ), Glacier View CDP had 249 residents on a land area of 1160.8 km². The median age was 42.9 years (US national mean: 35.3 years). The per capita income (English per capita income ) amounted to US $ 14,855 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 4.0% of the population had their income below the poverty line (national average in the USA: 12.4%). 32.9% of the population are of German descent , 14.5% are of English - and 12.9% are of Irish descent .
