Glennallen is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area in Alaska . The parish is about 300 km east of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway , near the junction with the Richardson Highway . The Wrangell-St Elias National Park begins a few kilometers further east.
The name is derived from the surnames of Edwin F. Glenn and Henry Tureman Allen , two officers of the United States Army who were involved in explorations in the Copper River region at the end of the 19th century .
Unlike most other localities in the area, Glennallen was not built on the site of a native Alaskan settlement. The region was previously settled by the Ahtna .
Glennallen serves as the supply center for the Copper River region. Offices of federal institutions such as the Bureau of Land Management or the Department of Fish and Game , road maintenance and the visitor center of the national park are located in or near Glennallen. Gulkana airport is 7 km northeast.
