In contrast to the other states (with the exception of Louisiana ), the US state Alaska is not divided into counties . The corresponding administrative units are called Boroughs in Alaska . Areas that are not assigned to any of the 19 “organized” boroughs are part of the Unorganized Borough , which is divided into 10 so-called census areas . The difference is that the boundaries of the census areas are set by the United States Census Bureau , not the state of Alaska. A census area has no administrative bodies of its own and therefore no capital. The city of Anchorage is an independent administrative entity.
