List of counties in Nevada

The US state of Nevada is divided into 16 counties . The capital, Carson City, is an independent city but is treated the same as a county according to the US Census Bureau .

On November 25, 1861, Nevada was first divided into nine counties. Nevada joined the United States on October 31, 1864, with eleven counties by then. In 1969 Ormsby County and the city of Carson City were merged and made an independent city. Carson City is the capital of Nevada, but the largest and most famous city in Nevada is Las Vegas .

The FIPS code for Nevada is 32, the symbol NV.

Former counties

  • Bullfrog County , formed from parts of Nye County in 1987, but reversed in 1989 when the establishment was declared illegal.
  • Lake County, Nevada , one of the original nine counties, was renamed Roop County in 1862 and then split into Lassen County , California in 1864, with the remaining part being incorporated into Washoe County in 1883.
  • Ormsby County , one of the original nine counties. Merged with Carson City in 1869 to form the independent city of that name.
