Tonopah is a census-designated place in Nye County , Nevada , United States and has been a county seat since 1905 . In 2000 Tonopah had 2627 inhabitants.

Tonopah was founded in 1901 by James Butler after a silver find. Until 1905 it had two names, Tonopah (which means something like some water and a few trees in the language of the Western Shoshone Indians ) and Butler City. Ultimately, however, the first name prevailed.

During the Second World War, an airport for the training of bomber pilots was built in Tonopah, which is now used for civilian purposes. The residents still feel very attached to the Air Force today. A memorial to the bomber pilots of the 2nd Gulf War has stood in the city since 1993 .

The town houses a small open-air museum in which devices and tools from gold and silver production are exhibited. The largest hotel in the area is the Mizpah , an original hotel from the city's early days with the flair of the Old West .

Tonopah is at the intersection of US Highway 6 and US Highway 95 . Tonopah's geographic coordinates are 38 ° 4 ′  N , 117 ° 14 ′  W (38.069058, −117.230502).

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, 2,627 people lived in the city. The population density was 62.6 people per km ². There were 1561 housing units at an average of 37.2 per km ². Tonopah's population was 91.24% White , 0.76% Black or African American , 1.41% Native American , 0.42% Asian , 0.30% Pacific Islander , and 2.82% of other races belong to and 3.05% named two or more races. 6.17% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Tonopah were distributed to 1109 households out of which 32.2% had children under 18 years of age. 48.9% of households were married, 7.5% had a female head of the household without a husband and 39.4% were not families. 34.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.03.

The population was divided into 27.1% minors, 6.2% 18–24 year olds, 29.3% 25–44 year olds, 27.3% 45–64 year olds and 10.1% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were 108.3 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 105.9 men.

The median household income in Tonopah was 37,401 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 47,917 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 40,018 compared with $ 22,056 for women. The per capita income in Tonopah was $ 18,256. 11.2% of the population and 5.7% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 7.3% of minors and 19.1% of those aged 65 and over.
