From 1936 to 1964, when the section through California was shortened, Highway 6 was the longest in the U.S., now U.S. Highway 20 . When Highway 6 was laid out in 1926, Erie , Pennsylvania, was its eastern terminus.
Since Highway 6 runs congruently with other highways in places, its importance - in contrast to z. B. to US Highway 40 - reduced as a transcontinental traffic connection.
California
Today's section of Highway 6 through California runs 41 miles north from Bishop to the Nevada border . Before the numbering of the highways in California was rearranged in 1964, Highway 6 led on what is now US Highway 395 , California State Route 14 , Interstate 5 and Interstate 110 to Long Beach . Although all highway-like sections were lost due to the shortening in 1964, Highway 6 is still part of the California Freeway and Expressway System today .
Today Highway 6 begins in Bishop and heads north through the agricultural Chalfant Valley on the western edge of the White Mountains . After around 50 km you will reach the small town of Benton . This is where Highway 6 meets California State Route 120 , which leads to Yosemite National Park and the San Joaquin Valley . A few kilometers north of Benton, the border with Nevada is reached.
Nevada
Highway 6 now continues northeast through the semi-desert of Queen Valley . The road runs between Nevada's highest peak, Boundary Peak , and Montgomery Peak in California, each over 4,000 m high. The road now climbs through the single-leaved pine and Utah juniper forest up to the 2,185 m high Montgomery Pass . The direction is now gradually changing to the east.
Highway 6 now leads through a desert landscape with the former mining settlement Columbus before US Highway 95 joins from the left . The highways 6 and 95 now lead together in an easterly direction to Tonopah , where the highway 95 turns south. 24 km south of Tonopah is the restricted military area and nuclear test site Nellis Range .
Highway 6 continues east through the Basin and Range Province . In the ghost town of Warm Springs which opens Nevada State Route 375 a. Now the direction changes again to the northeast and finally reaches the small town of Ely, the largest town in Nevada on Highway 6. This is where Highway 6 meets US Highway 50 and US Highway 93 . The three highways now run a joint route through the Schell Creek Range east of Ely , which is known for its green forests and meadows as well as its wildlife.
After Highway 93 left the common course to the south. Highway 6 and 50 turn together again in an easterly direction. The road overcomes the Snake Range over the Sacramento Pass north of Wheeler Peak , Nevada's second highest mountain in the Great Basin National Park . A little later, Highways 6 and 50 north of the Mormon settlement of Baker jointly reach the Utah border .
Utah
Highway 6 and Highway 50 come together to Utah and leave the state together. Within this state, however, they mostly take different routes, of which Highway 50 takes the newer and shorter route.
A few kilometers after the Nevada border, highways 6 and 50, which run together, cross Utah State Route 159 . After a further 142 km of joint east-northeast course, the two highways separate on the eastern edge of Delta . While Highway 50 takes a shorter southern course, Highway 6 now turns to the north-northeast.
In the further course, Highway 6 and Interstate 15 reach the city of Spanish Fork . There Highway 6 turns southeast and meets US Highway 89 on the southeast edge of Spanish Fork . After 15.4 km of common course, Highway 6 leaves this in an easterly direction, while Highway 89 turns south.
The direction is now gradually changing back to a southeastern course and leads past the edge of the Uinta National Forest . In Helper joins from the left of US Highway 191 and both roads now run together to the southeast. Via Price and Wellington the road now turns south and reaches Interstate 70 , which runs jointly in a west-east direction, and US Highway 50. All four roads now run on a common route to the east, until after a few kilometers Highway 191 to the south turns towards Arizona .
The joint route of Interstate 70, US Highway 6 and US Highway 50 now leads partly east and partly northeast to the border with Colorado . A few kilometers before that, Highway 6 leaves the common course again and runs parallel a few kilometers away.
Colorado
Highway 6 now continues in an easterly direction for a few kilometers parallel to Interstate 70 and Highway 50. At Fruita , the highway enters the valley of the upper Colorado River . Along with Highway 50, Highway 6 runs through downtown Grand Junction , while Interstate 70 runs on the northern outskirts. Here Highway 50 finally leaves the common route.
On the 391 km long section of Grand Junction to Denver the Highway runs partially parallel, partially congruent with the Interstate 70. On this route opens at the crossing of the White River National Forest of US Highway 24 , a western at its end point. Further east, Highway 6 crosses the Front Range and thus the North American Continental Divide over the 3,655 m high Loveland Pass , while Interstate 70 runs further north through the Eisenhower Tunnel . Below the pass, US Highway 40 joins Georgetown from the north and also leads together to Denver.
Here the highway meets Interstates 25 and 76 as well as US Highways 36 , 85 , 87 and 287 . Within the city, Highway 6 runs over 6th Avenue (also called 6th Avenue Freeway ).
Highway 6 now leads north-west out of Denver and joins Interstate 76 a little later. In Wiggins , the road meets US Highway 34 , Colorado State Highway 39 and Colorado State Highway 52 . The highway now continues in an easterly direction together with Highway 34. At Fort Morgan , Highway 34 separates from the common route. From Brush , Highway 6 runs alone again, in a north-easterly direction to Sterling but still parallel with Interstate 76. Here, Highway 6 meets US Highway 138 , Colorado State Highway 14 and Colorado State Highway 61 .
In the further course, the direction gradually changes to an eastern course. US Highway 385 crosses in Holyoke . A few miles to the east, Highway 6 reaches the border between Colorado and Nebraska .
Nebraska
Coming from Colorado, Highway 6 initially heads southeast to rejoin Highway 34 in Culbertson . Both roads run now on the same route eastward, crossing in McCook the US Highway 83 and Arapahoe to US Highway 283 . The road leads north past Edison , where US Highway 136 joins and thus reaches its western end point. After the course is temporarily swung to a northeastern course, it crosses in Holdrege to US Highway 183 and then performs again in the east. US Highway 281 crosses in Hastings and Highway 34 leaves the joint route in a northerly direction. Further east, crosses in Fairmont of US Highway 81 , before the road north again Interstate 80 approaches and in parallel at a distance of a few kilometers to the east.
In the west of Nebraska's capital Lincoln , Highway 6 meets US Highway 77 near its northern end point. Highway 34 also meets Highway 6 again and crosses it. Highway 6 leaves the city in a northeasterly direction and shortly afterwards crosses Interstate 80. Now Highway 6 continues northeast and crosses the Platte River behind Ashland .
South of Gretna , the course is transferred to a northern direction, crossing west of Omaha to US Highway 275 , before it turns to the east and on a four-lane road, the center of Nebraska's largest city Omaha reached. There US Highway 75 crosses and together with Interstate 480 , Highway 6 crosses the Missouri River , which forms the border between Nebraska and Iowa .
