South carolina

From the intersection with Interstate 26 south of Columbia, I-77 initially forms the eastern bypass around the greater metropolitan area and meets the US Highways 76 and 378 . After passing Fort Jackson to the east, Interstate 20 and US Highway 1 shortly thereafter . After the junction of South Carolina State Route 277 , the road leaves the greater Columbia area in a northerly direction. The interstate now runs parallel to US Highway 21 to Rock Hill . On this route it is crossed several times by the US 21. From about one kilometer before the North Carolina border, they begin to share the route.

North Carolina

Transition from Virginia to North Carolina

In North Carolina, Interstate 77 meets Interstate 485 about three miles and then runs through the greater Charlotte area , the state's largest city. In the center of town, the street is joined by Interstate 277 , US Highways 29 and 74, and North Carolina State Route 16 . A few kilometers after the intersection with Interstate 85 , I-77 separates from US Highway 21 and continues north.

In the south of the city of Statesville , Interstate 77 meets US Highway 70 and shortly afterwards US Highway 64 . In the northeast of the city, the street is crossed by Interstate 40 . It meets US Highway 421 west of the hamlet of Hamptonville . From Elkin onwards , I-77 and US 21 will now finally separate and the interstate will continue to head north. Interstate 74 branches off west of the town of Mount Airy before the road reaches the Virginia border.

Virginia

In Virginia Interstate 77 further extends in the north and west of the true Hill Ville to the US Highways 58 and 221 . After crossing the New River , it is crossed by US Highway 52 . Between Fort Chiswell and Wytheville , the road uses the route of Interstate 81 and US Highway 11 . From the town of Bland , the US 52 runs parallel to I-77 in a northerly direction to the border with West Virginia, using Big Walker Mountain and the East River Mountain Tunnel .

West Virginia

In West Virginia, Interstate 77 first meets east of Princeton on US Highway 460 . US Highway 19 crosses it south of Camp Creek . Between Beckley and Charleston , the road uses the route of Interstate 64 . The joint route runs from Emmons together with US Highway 60 in the valley of the Kanawha River . In the center of Charleston, I-77 meets US Highway 119, and Interstate 79 branches off in the north of the city near Yeager Airport .

West of Ripley the interstate is crossed by US Highway 33 and to the east of Parkersburg it meets US Highway 50 . With the crossing of the Ohio River east of Williamstown , the road reaches the state of Ohio.

Ohio

In Ohio Interstate runs further north and meets east of Cambridge on the Interstate 70 and on US Highways 22 and 40 . To the east of Newcomerstown on US Highway 36 . US Highway 250 uses the route of Interstate 77 between New Philadelphia and Strasburg . In the south of the city of Canton it is crossed by US Highway 30 and together with US Highway 62 forms a western bypass around the city center.

To the south of Greater Akron , I-77 meets Interstate 277 and US Highway 224 . After the first intersection with Interstate 76 , both run west past the center of Akron. After the separation of the two highways, Interstate 77 leads in a northwest direction and from the intersection with Ohio State Route 21 again in a northerly direction. Interstate 271 first crosses the freeway near the town of Richfield . Shortly thereafter, it meets Interstate 80 , which forms the Ohio Turnpike in this section and marks the border with Greater Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland.

After Interstate 80, I-77 leads directly to downtown Cleveland. Along the way, they first crossed in the suburb of Independence , the Interstate 480 , Cleveland's southern ring road. Shortly afterwards it crosses the Cuyahoga River . Once on its eastern high bank, the motorway follows the course of the river with some distance and serves Cleveland's most important industrial area, the Flats . After crossing Interstate 490 and traversing the main line of the local railroad lines, the freeway turns northwest and finally joins US Highway 422 and Ohio State Routes 14 and 43 directly in front of Cleveland's city center on Interstate 90 , which here forms the southern inner-city bypass .

The last stretch between I-480 and downtown is also known as the Willow Freeway . The associated plans for an intersection-free main arterial road for Cleveland go back to the 1930s. Construction began in 1938 as part of a job creation scheme during the Roosevelt New Deal . When the US government decided to build the interstate highway system in the mid-1950s, the Willow Freeway was integrated into the planning and thus part of today's I-77.
