Interstate 57 is part of the US Interstate Highway System . The freeway runs from the southern end of the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago , where it leaves Interstate 94 , via Champaign and Cairo to Miner in southeast Missouri , where it meets Interstate 55 . Compared to Interstate 55, it is an abbreviation for the route from Chicago to New Orleans, because it does not make the detour via Springfield and St. Louis , but instead follows the more direct route of the Illinois Central Railroad to Cairo . Interstate 57 is the only unnamed freeway in the Chicago metropolitan area .
