Champaign is a US university town with 75,254 inhabitants (as of 2016) in Champaign County in the state of Illinois and is located about 250 km south of Chicago . Together with Urbana , it now forms a twin city (Urbana-Champaign, also known as Champaign-Urbana or Chambana ), which is strongly influenced by the University of Illinois . Together with the nearby town of Savoy , Champaign and Urbana form the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Area .
history
Champaign was founded as West Urbana in 1857 because the course of the Illinois Central Railroad passed a few miles west of the city of Urbana . In 1860 the place was renamed Champaign when it was granted town dignity . The city takes its name from the name of the county in which it is located, which in turn is named after Champaign County in the US state of Ohio .
