Ted Sirota (born May 3, 1969 in Champaign , Illinois ) is an American drummer and band leader in the field of jazz and reggae .

Ted Sirota grew up in Flossmoor, a southern suburb of Chicago , and began playing drums and percussion when he was ten. At the age of 15, under the impression of a Max Roach concert in The Jazz Showcase , he decided to pursue a career as a professional musician. During high school he was into reggae and jazz; Besides Max Roach, musical role models were Philly Joe Jones , Elvin Jones , Sly Dunbar , Carlton Barrett and Style Scott . After graduating, Sirota studied from 1987 in Boston at Berklee College of Music with Joe Hunt ; he also had private lessons with Alan Dawson .

From 1988 Sirota worked with the guitarist Jeff Parker ; he also played a. a. with Kurt Rosenwinkel , Mark Turner , Seamus Blake , Dwayne Burno , Antonio Hart , Roy Hargrove , Danilo Pérez , Geoff Keezer , Chris Cheek , Jorge Rossy and Joshua Redman . With Jeff Parker, Sirota founded the formation Last Kwartet , which also included Chris Lopes (bass) and Sara P. Smith (trombone). After graduating in 1991, he returned to Chicago the following year, where he continued his work with Last Kwartet , before the group finally disbanded in 1994 without leaving any recordings.

In the following years Sirota worked as a freelance musician in Chicago a. a. with Lin Halliday , Von Freeman , Jodie Christian , Rob Mazurek , Bobby Broom , Fred Hopkins , Patricia Barber , Dave Spector , Little Smokey Smothers , Pinetop Perkins, and Johnny Adams ; He also toured with the blues musician Eddie Kirkland and from 1994 appeared regularly at the Green Mill with the jazz band Sabertooth . From 1996 to 2008 he took part in eight recording sessions in the field of jazz.

In 1996 he formed his own band, Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls , again with Jeff Parker. The self-titled debut album by Rebel Souls was released in 1996 on the British label Naim. 1998 followed the album Propaganda , 2000 Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls vs. the Forces of Evil . After further releases for Naim and Delmark Records , the band performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2004 and again in 2010 . The formation has consisted of Chicago musicians such as Rob Mazurek, Kevin Kizer, Geof Bradfield , Noel Kupersmith, Greg Ward II, Dave Miller, Clark Sommers and Jake Vinsel. In 2013 Sirota founded Ted Sirota's Heavyweight Dub as another band project , which focuses on dub reggae . Sirota lives in the Chicago borough of Rogers Park, where he also teaches.
