Robert "Rob" Mazurek (* 1965 in Jersey City ) is an American cornetist and composer of modern creative jazz .

Live and act

Mazurek started playing cornet when he was ten. After lessons at the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago, he oriented himself to hardbop (especially the game of Lee Morgan , Kenny Dorham and Freddie Hubbard ) and performed with Kenny Prince and Yoron Israel . Then he founded his first quartet, with whom he performed successfully in 1993 and released his first albums ( Man Facing East 1994, Badlands 1995).

Around 1996 he broadened his musical horizons - influenced by Morton Feldman and Iannis Xenakis as well as by the Art Ensemble of Chicago , Bill Dixon and Wadada Leo Smith - and performed with Jeff Parker . Together with John Herndon he belonged to the group Isotope 217 . In 1997 he founded the Chicago Underground duo with Chad Taylor , which released several avant-garde albums on the Thrill Jockey label. From him the Chicago Underground Orchestra (with Jeff Parker, Chad Taylor , Noel Kupersmith and Sara P. Smith), which also recorded several albums. He also played in the electronics project São Paulo Unterground (with Guilherme Granado and Mauricio Takara), with which he has released four albums so far. In 2005 he founded his Exploding Star Orchestra , with which he made several guest appearances in Europe. In 2012 he recorded his album Skull Sessions with an octet on the occasion of an exhibition about Miles Davis in São Paulo .
