Jeff Parker (born April 4, 1967 in Bridgeport , Connecticut ) is a guitarist in the fields of free jazz , improvised music and post-rock .

Parker has been a guitarist since his youth and studied at Berklee College of Music . After completing his training, he moved to Chicago in 1991 . There he became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). He worked with Ernest Dawkins , Ted Sirota, and Pat Mallinger . Together with Rob Mazurek , he founded the electro-jazz fusion band Isotope 217 and the Chicago Underground Orchestra in the following years . He joined the post-rock band Tortoise ( TNT , 1998). He also worked with Jeb Bishop , Ken Vandermark and Scott Amendola . 1998 it chose the Kritikerpoll the downbeat for Talent Deserving Wider Recognition .

From then on, Parker worked on the one hand with musicians from Bill Callahan's band Smog , on the other hand with Fred Anderson . He founded other ensembles such as the Aesop Quartet, Tricolor and Vega . In 2003 he presented his debut album Like-coping ( Delmark ), which he recorded with bassist Chris Lopes and drummer Chad Taylor . Together with Kevin Drumm and Michael Zerang , the improvisation album , Out Trios, Vol. 2 was created for Atavistic Records . In 2004 the solo album The Relatives followed . He also worked with Mazurek in the Exploding Star Orchestra and with Harris Eisenstadt ( The Soul and Gone , 2004), Nicole Mitchell , Mike Reed ( About Us , 2009) and Matana Roberts . His next recording as a leader was released with his trio in 2011 at Delmark, Bright Light in Winter .

After Parker moved to Los Angeles in 2013, he recorded the album Some Jellyfish Live Forever with Mazurek . RogueArt also released the debut album by the hip-hop / jazz band Illtet in 2015 : On Gain he worked with Mike Ladd , High Priest ( Antipop Consortium ) and Tyshawn Sorey . On Parker's solo album The New Breed (2016), the hip-hop influence and the use of sampling techniques was even greater. Later that year Parker released the solo LP Slight Freedom on the Eremite label.

2018 he joined for Ran Do with saxophonist Kjetil Moster , bassist Joshua Abrams and drummer John Herndon together. The Diagonal Filter quintet appeared later that year . He also contributed to Makaya McCraven 's Universal Beings album . In 2020, Parker published his Suite for Max Brown with his group New Breed , which now includes himself and Jamire Williams, McCraven, Mazurek, Paul Bryan, Jay Bellerose and the cellist Katinka Kleijn. The album Good Days was released with the Chicago Underground Quartet .
