Exploding Star Orchestra
The Exploding Star Orchestra is an American jazz band that was founded in Chicago in 2005 under the direction of cornetist Rob Mazurek .
Band history
In the Exploding Star Orchestra , members of the bands Tortoise , Isotope 217, Town and Country, Black Earth Ensemble, Loose Assembly, some of which belong to the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) , play in changing line- ups ; These included Josh Abrams (bass), Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), Jason Ajemian (bass), Jim Baker (piano), Matt Bauder (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone), Josh Berman (cornet), Carrie Biolo (vibraphone, marimba), Jeb Bishop (Trombone), John Herndon (drums), Jeff Kowalkowski (piano), Matthew Lux (bass), John McEntire (marimba, gongs), Nicole Mitchell (flute, vocals), Jeff Parker (guitar), Mike Reed (drums), Jason Stein (bass clarinet), Greg Ward (alto saxophone, clarinet) and Corey Wilkes (flugelhorn).
The formation came about when Mazurek was commissioned by the Chicago Cultural Center and the Jazz Institute to put together an avant-garde jazz ensemble for a concert . The We Are All from Somewhere Else suite was presented for this purpose. The album of the same name was recorded in Chicago in June 2006 and was released by Thrill Jockey in 2007 . In 2008 the band created another album in collaboration with Bill Dixon ; In 2010 the third album Stars Have Shapes followed on Delmark Records ; as part of a European tour they played a. a. a concert at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival . The album The Space Between followed in 2013 under the changed title Exploding Star Electro Acoustic Orchestra .
