Matthew "Matt" Lux (* 1973 in Chicago ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , guitar , composition ) who is active in the Chicago music scene.

Live and act

After graduating from Lane Technical College Prep High School (1991), Lux worked in the Chicago music scene, a. a. in genres such as jazz, rock, R&B, experimental and electronic music . The first jazz recordings were made in 1999 when he played in the backing band of the singer Janvier Jones ( Soul Searching ). He worked with Eddie Kirkland and George Freeman as well as Peven Everett and Iron & Wine . Since 1996 he has played with Rob Mazurek , first in the group Isotope 217 , later with Mandarin Movie , in the Exploding Star Orchestra , the Mazurek Quintet (with Jason Adasiewicz , Joshua Abrams ), in the Pulsar Quartet (with Angelica Sanchez , John Herndon ) , in the Chicago Odense Ensemble and in the Chicago / Sao Paulo Underground , with whom he appeared in 2013 at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival with Pharoah Sanders .

Furthermore, Lux formed the Underground Jazz Trio with Mark O'Leary and John Herndon and belonged to the formations Heaven & Earth, Thrill Jockey and Heroic Doses . In the field of jazz he was involved in 14 recording sessions between 1999 and 2013. Under his own name, Lux and his Communication Arts Quartet (with Patrick Avery , Ben LaMar Gay , Jayve Montgomery ) released the album Contra / Fact (Astral Spirits, 2018), in which he influenced the Art Ensemble of Chicago , Miles Davis and Lester Young processed.

In 2014, Matthew Lux was featured in Bass Player Magazine and named a "Rising Star" on the electric bass in the 2014 Down Beat review poll .
