Angelica Sanchez

Angelica Sanchez (* 1972 in Phoenix / Arizona ) is an American improvisation and jazz musician ( piano , composition).

Career

Sanchez took clarinet lessons as a child before switching to the piano. She studied piano and composition at Arizona State University from 1990 to 1994 . In 1995 she went to New York. Here she met Tony Malaby , with whom she performed in the region. Later the drummer Tom Rainey joined them. The trio recorded two live albums in Brooklyn in 2003 .

As a band leader, Sanchez released the album Mirror Me in 2003 with Tony Malaby, Tom Rainey and bassist Michael Formanek . From 2007 the quartet was expanded to include the French guitarist Marc Ducret . In addition, Sanchez et al. a. with Susie Ibarra , Tim Berne , Mario Pavone , Trevor Dunn , Mark Dresser , Ed Schuller , Judi Silvano , Greg Tardy , Reggie Nicholson , George Schuller , Jeff Williams , Daniel Carter , Michael Sarin , Tony Moreno , Scott Maclemore , Chad Taylor and Ben Moons up. She formed the September Trio with Harris Eisenstadt and Ellery Eskelin . In the 2010s she led a nonet that included Thomas Heberer , Kenny Warren , Chris Speed , Michael Attias , Ben Goldberg , Omar Tamez , John Hébert and Sam Ospovat . She can also be heard on albums by Anthony Braxton and Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra .
