Sam Ospovat
Ethan Sam Ospovat (born July 26, 1978 ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( drums , percussion ) who is also active in the field of new music .
Live and act
Ospovat, who comes from Lincoln, Nebraska , first learned piano and sang in the boys' choir before he started playing drums in 5th grade. He made his first appearances in the San Francisco Bay Area , where he had lessons in percussion with William Winant and drums with Peter Magadini and George Marsh . He first studied music and electronic music at the University of California, Santa Cruz up to a bachelor's degree . In 2002 he took part in the world premiere of Alvin Curran's The Milhaud Chair (or the History of Furniture Music) conducted by Pauline Oliveros . In Oakland he played drums in the indie rock and experimental jazz trio Beep , in the improvisation group Timosaurus , in the jazz trio Anteater , in a duo with the vocalist Lorin Benedict, in the improvisation ensemble The Oakland Active Orchestra , The Permanent Wave Ensemble (with which a Carla -Bley Tribute) and in the pop band Kapowski . He has also performed with Cecil Taylor , Wadada Leo Smith and Maryanne Amacher at Mills College , where he obtained a Master of Arts degree in percussion performance . It was there that he made his debut album Piki (2012), with guest musicians such as Michael Coleman , Phillip Greenlief , Lisa Mezzacappa , Matt Nelson and Aram Shelton . Since then Ospovat u. a. with William Winant, Angelica Sanchez , Ches Smith , John Schott , Ava Mendozas Unnatural Ways ( We Aliens ) and Miles Kurosky . In the field of new music he is on recordings with works by Lou Harrison , Jose Maceda and Moe! To hear Staiano. He has been a faculty member at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts since 2016 .
