Lisa Mezzacappa

Lisa Mezzacappa (* 1975 in Staten Island ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( double bass , composition ).

Life

Mezzacappa studied double bass with Michael Formanek and Peter Spaar, improvisation with Henry Threadgill , Steve Coleman and John D'Earth ; she also attended workshops and a. with Bob Moses , Art Baron , Meredith Monk , Terry Riley and David Murray . In 1997 she earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Virginia and in 2003 a master's degree in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Berkeley . She has received grants from the American Composers Forum , the City of Oakland, and Meet the Composer .

Since the early 2000s she has been working in the San Francisco a. a. with the Beth Custer Ensemble, Aaron Novik , Vinny Golia , Green Mitchell and the formations Bristle and Cylinder (with Darren Johnston , Aram Shelton , Kjell Nordeson ). With her band Bait & Switch she released her debut album What Is Known on Clean Feed Records in 2010 , on which Vijay Anderson, John Finkbeiner and Aaron Bennett contributed. In 2011 the album Cosmic Rift followed ( Leo Records , among others with Kjell Nordeson). With Finkbeiner and Fay Victor she formed the Trio Eartheaters . She also curates concert series in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

In the field of jazz, she was involved in 13 recording sessions between 2006 and 2013. Her compositions are inspired by the improvisations of Ornette Coleman , Henry Threadgill, the Art Ensemble of Chicago , Eric Dolphy and Rahsaan Roland Kirk . In 2013 and 2014, Mezzacappa was voted "Rising Star" among the bassists ' critics polls for Down Beat .
