Fay Victor
Fay Victor (born July 26, 1965 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American jazz singer and composer .
Live and act
Victor, whose parents are from Trinidad and Tobago , grew up in Wheatley Heights on Long Island . In the 1980s, while studying politics at Syracuse University , she began singing under the impression of the loss of her mother; she then attended the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, where she studied music theory and piano . Her career as a professional musician began in clubs in the New York area and a three-month stay in Japan in 1991, which influenced her turn to jazz singing. Upon her return she performed in clubs such as Birdland , The Village Gate , Sign of the Dove and B. Smith's ; she also worked a. a. with Bernard Purdie , Walter Booker and Don Braden . Between 1996 and 2003 she lived in Amsterdam. In 1999 she released her debut album on Timeless Records , In My Own Room . Victor counts Betty Carter , Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae among her main influences. In 2010 she released the duo album Bare with guitarist Anders Nilsson as The Exposed Blues Duo , on which she interpreted her own compositions and jazz standards such as Mood Indigo , Blue Monk and Rockin 'Chair . This was followed by the album Kaiso Stories with the formation Other Dimensions in Music . In the field of jazz, Victor participated in 9 recording sessions between 1995 and 2017. She performed with the ICP Orchestra during the 2010 Music Triennale in the Cologne Philharmonic . She has performed programs with songs by Herbie Nichols since 2016.
