Kenneth S. "Ken" Filiano (born October 27, 1952 in Patchogue , Long Island , New York ) is an American jazz bassist who specializes in modern creative and free improvisation music .

Live and act

Ken Filiano studied trumpet at Syracuse University from 1970 , switched to the double bass in 1974 and completed his studies in 1978. He then moved to Boston , where he worked with Mark Harvey and Arnie Cheatham and formed a duo with saxophonist Steve Adams . In the mid-1980s he studied with Bertram Turetzky . Since 1992 he lived in Los Angeles , where he was active in the Californian underground scene around Vinny Golia and his Nine Winds label; he worked in the Mark Harvey Aarrdvark Jazz Orchestra and with Hafez Modirzadeh. In the early 1990s he played a. a. with Bill Perkins , Marty Ehrlich , Jimmy Cleveland , Rob Blakeslee , Joey Sellers , Dennis González and in the trio of the pianist Richard Grossman until his death in 1992. Recognition from jazz critics brought in particular his participation on Grossman's album In the Air (1989) .

Since the 1990s Filiano has worked on a number of albums in the stylistic range from post-bop to free improvisation, which were created especially for the labels CIMP and Knitting Factory ; He can be heard on recordings by Herb Robertson , Bill Perkins , Paul Smoker (1996-2000), the Roswell Rudd Bigband (1999), the band Implicate Order and Fred Hess and has performed with Bertram Turetzky , Barre Phillips , Joëlle Léandre , Bobby Bradford and the Rova Saxophone Quartet .

In 1994 Filiano moved to New York City and studied at Rutgers University from 1994–97 , also with saxophonist Michael Moore . There he worked a. a. with Steve Swell , Roswell Rudd, Lou Grassi , Paul Smoker and Chris Chalfont , as well as session musicians for Frank Morgan , James Newton , Milcho Leviev , John Heard , Joëlle Léandre, Bobby Bradford, Warne Marsh , Taylor Ho Bynum ( Enter the Plustet , 2016 ) and Kenny Barron .

Filiano lives in Brooklyn . The bassist has taught at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque , New York State University (Buffalo), UCLA and Rutgers University .
