Martin Lewis "Marty" Ehrlich (born May 31, 1955 in St. Paul / Minnesota ) is an American jazz saxophonist , clarinetist and flautist .

Live and act

Ehrlich grew up in St. Louis , where he was influenced by the Black Artists Group and on the Human Arts Ensemble's Under The Sun album . From 1973 to 1977 he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston a . a. with George Russell , Jaki Byard , Joe Maneri and Gunther Schuller .

In 1978 he went to New York City , where he led three bands: The Marty Ehrlich Quartet , The Traveler's Tales Group and the Dark Woods Ensemble . He also works in a duo with pianist Myra Melford and in trio C / D / E with Andrew Cyrille and Mark Dresser . He also made duo recordings with Muhal Richard Abrams , Mike Nock , Anthony Cox and John Lindberg . On more than one hundred CDs he is still sideman of musicians like Ray Anderson , Fontella Bass , Tim Berne , Anthony Braxton , Jaki Byard , John Carter , Anthony Davis , Jack DeJohnette , James Emery , Peter Erskine , George Gruntz , Chico Hamilton , Julius Hemphill , Andrew Hill ( Dusk , 1999), Robin Holcomb , Wayne Horvitz , Leroy Jenkins , Oliver Lake , Roscoe Mitchell , James Newton , Bobby Previte , Randy Sandke , Wadada Leo Smith and John Zorn .

As a composer Ehrlich u. a. for the New York Composer's Orchestra , the Boston Jazz Composer's Alliance , the Lydian String Quartet , the Rova Saxophone Quartet , the Kitchen House Blend Orchestra , the New York String Trio and for the pianist Ursula Oppens . In 1995 he was Composer in Residence at the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum in Boston , and in 2000 Peter Ivers Visiting Artist at Harvard University .
