Robert "Bobby" Previte (born July 16, 1951 in Niagara Falls , New York ) is an American jazz drummer and composer .

Live and act

Previte began playing drums in rock groups at the age of 14 and studied percussion at the University of Buffalo . He was tutored by Morton Feldman , John Cage , Lou Harrison . Tony Williams , whom he met on the Miles Davis album Filles des Kilimanjaro , encouraged him to devote himself to jazz drums. In 1980 he moved to New York City . He soon appeared around the M-Base musicians, worked with Greg Osby , Robin Eubanks , but also in the “Downtown” scene around John Zorn and Bill Frisell , as well as with Don Byron , Anthony Davis and Mark Helias . In the mid-1980s he presented his own group Bumb and had a trio with Wayne Horvitz and Butch Morris . In 1990 he founded his electrical group Wheater Clear, Track Fast , but also recorded in parallel with his Empty Suits . At the latest with his commissioned composition "Music of the Moscow Circus" (1991, CD), which he recorded with his own octet, he received international attention. He also played in a duo with Marc Ducret . In 1998 he founded his large formation Voodoo Orchestra , with which he has released a series of five albums since 2002. He is currently playing a fusion of jazz and classical rock with The Coalition of the Willing . Previte has also recorded with Marty Ehrlich , The President , Guy Klucevsek , Tom Waits , Tim Berne , Annie Ross , Victoria Williams , Jane Ira Bloom , Elliott Sharp and Ray Anderson .

In addition, Previte has also recorded film music, for example for Robert Altman'sShort Cuts ” (in which he can also be seen as a stage musician ). According to Martin Kunzler, the highly virtuoso drummer is “one of the musicians of our time who are by no means adequately perceived by the audience”. As early as 1990, he was recognized by the Down Beat critics poll as a drum talent that deserves further attention.
