Niagara Falls [ naɪˌæɡ (ə) ɹəˈfɔːlz ] is a US city in Niagara County in the state of New York . It is located on the Niagara River across from the Canadian city of the same name, Niagara Falls in the province of Ontario . The city has 50,193 (2010 census) inhabitants on an area of 43.6 km².
economy
The city is dominated by Niagara Falls , which attract hundreds of thousands of tourists to the city, but the Canadian sister city has better offers (shopping centers, etc.). The nearby Niagara Falls International Airport aims to be the birthplace of the first supersonic aircraft and the first commercial helicopter. The energy generated in Niagara Falls by means of hydropower plants (see list of the largest hydropower plants ), which was available cheaply and in large quantities and was used directly in the city, used to be a great location advantage for industry and secured jobs in the city.
In the course of globalization and significantly rising wage costs in the USA, however, this advantage was gradually lost, since the factories in countries such as China can be operated much cheaper. The city was also hit particularly hard by the recent global economic crisis . The city's unemployment rate was 10.9 percent (March 2011), well above the average for New York State, which was 8.0 percent.
Demographics
The city has struggled with a population decline since 1960, while the population of New York State and the United States as a whole has grown massively within that time. The consequences for the former big city are correspondingly large and serious. A turnaround is not in sight and for the majority of the population tourism remains the only hope of a turnaround. Otherwise the city threatens to sink to small town level within the next few decades.
Population development The data are census results. |
