Don Gais

Don Gais (born September 9, 1919 in Niagara Falls , New York , † October 9, 1996 in Lewiston , New York ) was an American jazz pianist and singer who worked for many years in Europe.

Life

During his military service Gais had the opportunity to make his first appearances as a pianist; after his discharge from the army he worked in the music scene of Buffalo a . a. with Charlie Wallace, CQ Price and Pete Suggs. In 1947 Rex Stewart brought him into his orchestra, with whom the first recordings were made and Gais also went on a European tour. After the tour ended, he settled in Copenhagen ; There he played in a trio with Helge Jacobsen (guitar) and Thrond Svennevig (bass) in 1949 for the Tono label , including a cover version of On the Sunny Side of the Street . This was followed by further recordings with the vocal quartet Three Reinerts and Susie .

In Basel he recorded in January 1950 in trio with Simon Brehm and Alf Johnsson and in August with Georges Schaller and Wallace Bishop for Austroton . During the 1950s he toured Europe frequently; At the end of the 1950s, he mainly appeared in the Basel club scene; there he recorded the album Jazz at the Atlantis No. 1 in 1958 with Paul Girard (bass) and Pierre Favre . In 1969 he performed in the Plaza Hotel in Frankfurt.
