Pierre Favre (born June 2, 1937 in Le Locle ) is a Swiss jazz drummer and percussionist .

Life

Favre began playing the drums with his brother and Raymond Droz when he was 15 years old . In 1954 he became a professional musician and played bebop , but also Dixieland and New Orleans jazz. He was particularly influenced initially by Philly Joe Jones , Bud Powell and Benny Bailey . He played in dance bands and from 1957 to 1960 in the orchestra of Radio Basel with Cédric Dumont , but also with George Gruntz , Flavio Ambrosetti and Barney Wilen . In addition, Favre accompanied Chet Baker at the first Comblain Jazz Festival , the following year Dusko Goykovich .

In the 1960s Favre worked as a drummer in Max Greger's orchestra and as a technician for Paiste in the development of overtone cymbals and developed a new melodic conception of percussion. So his instrument changed around the conventional jazz drums . This development is already indicated with the release of From Sticksland with Love , an extraordinary percussion production by Joachim E. Berendt from 1967 with three other drummers: Charly Antolini , Mani Neumeier and Daniel Humair . Over the next few years, Favre's drums became an increasingly independent ensemble, initially in free interplay with pianist Irène Schweizer and bassist Peter Kowald , but also with Michel Portal , with Joe Haider and especially with the French singer Tamia or Albert Mangelsdorff . Since around 1976 Favre has also appeared in solo concerts, but on the other hand bundles his playing with other drummers in larger percussion ensembles (including Naná Vasconcelos , Paul Motian , Fredy Studer , but also with Jon Balke and Lucas Niggli ). He passes on his knowledge to younger drummers at workshops.

Currently he often accompanies the dancer Michel Casanovas , performs in a duo with the tuba and serpent player Michel Godard or the pipa player Yang Jing and leads an ensemble with two wind players, two guitarists, a harpist and double bass ( Fleuve , 2006) .
