Charly Antolini (* 24. May 1937 in Zurich ) is a Swiss jazz - drummer who with Dixieland and Swing started and oriented in the 1960s and 70s to hard bop and fusion (Jazz Rock). He is considered to be one of the best handicraft and technical drummers in Europe.

Life

Antolini began his training on the traditional Basel drum in one of the drum schools in his hometown. In 1956 he began playing as a professional jazz musician in Paris. His role model is Louie Bellson . In Paris he played a. a. with Sidney Bechet , Bill Coleman and Albert Nicholas , followed by festival appearances across Europe. He became known in the 1950s for playing in the old-time jazz band "The Tremble Kids" (with trumpeter Oscar Klein and clarinetist Werner Keller ), with whom he still played occasionally in the 1990s. In 1962 he settled in Germany (Stuttgart), where he formed the rhythmic backbone of the SWR Bigband under Erwin Lehn for five years together with bassist Peter Witte and pianist Horst Jankowski . He also played in the big bands of Kurt Edelhagen (1974/75, also took part in the orchestra's tour of the Soviet Union in 1974), Peter Herbolzheimer and Max Greger as well as in the NDR big band .

With Max Greger junior and Milan Pilar he formed the fusion trio Catch Up in 1972 , which recorded several albums. Since 1976 he has been leading his own band with changing line- ups , "Charly Antolini's Jazz Power", in which he worked for a long time with Charly Augschöll or Steve Hooks (tenor saxophone), David Gazarov (piano), Rocky Knauer (bass) and well-known international ones Accompanied jazz musician. He also played u. a. with Wolfgang Dauner , Benny Goodman (1981/2 for his tour in Germany and Italy, a concert in Copenhagen was televised), Lionel Hampton (in the 1980s for appearances in Sylt and Copenhagen ), Barbara Dennerlein , Albert Mangelsdorff , Earl Hines , Roy Eldridge , Jimmy Giuffre , Art Farmer , Oliver Nelson , Art Van Damme , Fatty George , Stuff Smith , Baden Powell . His direct cut album Knock Out (1979) became famous and was sold out within a few days. It is still considered a stress test for hi-fi boxes to this day.

In 1994 Antolini founded the super trio with pianist Dirk Raufeisen and bassist Jimmy Woode .

Antolini is the artistic director of the Moosach swingt jazz series , organized by the Munich cultural association Die Linie 1 .
