Steve Hooks , actually Stephen George Hooks (* 25. March 1946 in Ottumwa , Iowa ; † 14. March 2019 in Munich ) was an American jazz - musicians and - composer , mainly known as a saxophonist .

Life

Hooks grew up in Iowa. He has four brothers and one sister. In 1959 his family moved to Tomah , Wisconsin . He began taking piano lessons at the age of five, began playing the clarinet at the age of nine and then played in the school band, where he switched to the baritone saxophone in 1962 . In 1963, his family moved to Memphis , Tennessee , where he finished school in 1964 and then began a scholarship to study at Memphis State University , which he gave up in favor of a career as a full-time musician in the Memphis soul scene.

From 1966 to 1968 he served in Missouri in the US Army and played there in Fort Leonard Wood in the army band. He then played with various soul, rock 'n' roll , country and jazz artists. In 1970 he went to Los Angeles , California . From 1972 to 1975 he traveled through Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky and Oklahoma and performed in cities such as St. Louis , Dallas and Nashville . He led his jazz band "The Steve Hooks Band" and played with music greats such as Al Aarons , Jimmy Smith , Paul Humphreys , Ray Drummond , Buddy Jones , Billy Childs , Ernie Andrews , Johnny Hammond Smith , Gary Willis , The Platters , The Drifters , The Ink Spots , Gabor Szabo , Raoul de Souza , John Patitucci . From 1969 he also played alto and tenor saxophone . During this time he worked as a permanent songwriter on the staff of Broadway Music in Muscle Shoals (1973), Warner Brothers Music in Hollywood (1980) and Hitz Galore Music in Van Nuys (1981). There he began making music professionally.

In 1995 he moved to Germany , where he settled in Munich . As musical director of the Weather Girls , he toured the country until 1999, as well as two and a half years with Charly Antolini on his tours through Germany, Austria , Italy and Switzerland . In Germany he also founded a "Steve Hooks Band". He worked for various studio and film productions and also worked with well-known musicians. Hooks is one of those saxophonists who can play melodies on two different saxophones.

He was married twice, leaving behind a daughter and a son.
