Ottumwa is a town (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Wapello County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 Ottum had about 25,023 inhabitants, the number of which had decreased to 24,840 by 2013.

The US Navy port tug, USS Ottumwa (YTB-761), was named after the city.

Ottumwa is located in southeastern Iowa on the Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . This forms about 130 km east of the Iowa border with Illinois ; the Missouri border runs around 50 km south.

In Ottumwa, the former CBQ east-west mainline of the BNSF Railway from Chicago to Omaha and the former Milwaukee Road north-east-southwest route from Davenport to Kansas City cross the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad .

The south-leading Wabash Railroad branch line to Moulton was shut down in the 1908s, as was the northwest-southeast line of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad from Des Moines to Keokuk . The Ottumwa and Kirkville Railroad and the Chicago Fort Madison and Des Moines Railway are also no longer in operation .

Ottumwa is an intermediate stop of Amtrak -Fernzuges California Zephyr (Chicago-San Francisco). The built and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1951 now used by Amtrak station has been in the NRHP listed.

In 1851 Ottumwa was destroyed by a flood. In 1857 coal mining began along Bear Creek four miles west of Ottumwa. In 1914 over 100,000 tons were mined in the Ottumwa area.
