List of Lieutenant Governors of Kansas
The office of Lieutenant Governor of Kansas ( Lieutenant Governor of Kansas ) was in the course of the transformation of the territory to a state of the United States created. Joseph Pomeroy Root , a Republican , was the new state's first lieutenant governor, taking office on February 12, 1861. The lieutenant governor is elected as the governor's running mate along with the governor.
As in other US states, the vice governor's office was vacant several times over the years, either because the incumbent left office prematurely or had to take over from a governor who left early. Since the state constitution provides for the office to be filled only through popular elections, the office of vice governor could not be refilled subsequently. Early elections , such as in countries and states with a parliamentary system of government , are excluded in the United States at both the federal and most state levels.
