Jeffrey "Jeff" Colyer (* 3. June 1960 in Hays , Kansas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He served as the governor of Kansas from January 31, 2018 to January 14, 2019 . Previously, he was lieutenant governor of his home state from 2011 to 2018 .

Career

Jeff Colyer attended public schools in his home country. He then studied until 1981 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC He was then for a year until 1982 at the University of Cambridge . After studying medicine at the University of Kansas , he was admitted to the doctorate in 1986. In the following years he worked as an intern at various hospitals in the United States. His specialty was or is plastic surgery. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1988, while working at the Washington Hospital Center , he was a White House Fellow for a year . Since 1994 he has been running his own medical practice in Overland Park in his specialty. He also continued his political career. In 2002, he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the US House of Representatives elections . Between 2007 and 2009 he served in the Kansas House of Representatives and from 2009 to 2011 served on the State Senate . He was a member of several committees.

In 2010, Jeff Colyer was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas, alongside Sam Brownback . He has held this office since January 10, 2011. He was Deputy Governor . In 2014, both the governor and his deputy were re-elected, starting in January 2015.

After Governor Brownback resigned on January 31, 2018 to accept an embassy post in the Trump administration , Colyer was automatically promoted to the new governor. He named the entrepreneur Tracey Mann as his lieutenant governor . Even before his rise to governor, Colyer announced his intention to run in the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018. In the Republican area code on August 7, 2018, polls had predicted, there was a head-to-head race between Colyer and Kris Kobach , the former Secretary of State of Kansas. The right-wing Kobach was officially the day before the Primary of US President Donald Trump supported. After counting almost all votes, Kobach (126,257 votes) was 191 ahead of Colyer (126,066). Problems with voting computers in populous Johnson County . On August 14, 2018, Colyer said that he would not strive for a recount and that Kobach would recognize the narrow lead of 345 votes in the final result. In the later election campaign he then supported Kobach, which, however, was defeated by the Democrat Laura Kelly . Kelly replaced Colyer in the governorship on January 14, 2019.
